what is a climax commuity?

Climax Community is an ecological term for plant, fungi, and animal communities reaching a ‘steady state’ – of working together in harmony.

Think cleared fields making their way back to native hardwood forests. These communities are diverse, supporting each other’s individual needs through reciprocity.

The climax stage is not permanent. Disturbance, sometimes needed and sometimes not, always destroys the equilibrium.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?

IBecause of this impermanence, some ecologists do not use the term. But it is a nice idea, perhaps unachievable, but aspirational.

Rather than forcing nature to work for us, we adapt to the conditions of time and place. We create reciprocal relationships with our environment and people to make each other thrive.
